About

Dr. Alexander Okwonna currently serves as Provost of the San Jacinto College North Campus, providing academic, administrative, and fiscal leadership while managing the campus's daily operations. He serves on the College's Strategic Leadership Team and is responsible for implementing the College's academic plan and promoting academic excellence through collaboration, cooperation, and teamwork while fostering a campus climate consistent with the College's core values.

Before accepting his current position, Dr. Okwonna served as a CTE faculty member, Clinical Liaison, Program Director of the Pharmacy Technician Program, Department Chair of Health Sciences, and Dean of Heath and Natural Sciences. He has also served on several local and statewide CTE committees.

Prior to joining San Jacinto College, Dr. Okwonna worked for over twenty years in healthcare as a pharmacist in a variety of settings. He also served in the United States Army.

Dr. Okwonna is a strong proponent of civic and community engagement.  He is laser-focused on finding resources to support students. Dr. Okwonna's commitment to being a servant leader is evident in his leadership positions in numerous professional and community organizations. Dr. Okwonna serves on the board for several organizations, including the Pearland Chamber of Commerce, Galena Park ISD Educational Foundation, Career Gear Houston, North Channel Area Chamber of Commerce, and HCA Houston Healthcare Pearland Hospital. In addition, Dr. Okwonna is a Rotarian and believes in being involved in the community through chambers of commerce, non-profit organizations and the church.

Dr. Okwonna has received several awards, including The U.S. Army Certificate of Achievement for Outstanding Performance as Class Leader, San Jacinto College's Distinguished Faculty Award, League for Innovation in Community College's John & Suanne Roueche Excellence Award, the Inaugural Houston Community College's Distinguished Alumni Award, the Pearland Chamber of Commerce Chairman’s Award, and the North Channel Area Chamber of Commerce’s Board Member of the Year award.

Dr. Okwonna is a proud community college graduate. He received an Associate of Science degree from Houston Community College, a bachelor’s degree in Biology from Texas Southern University, a master’s degree in Education from the University of Houston, and a Doctorate in Pharmacy from Texas Southern University. He is also a Registered Pharmacist (R.Ph.) licensed in Texas.
