Davis Merrell began his academic career at Del Mar College as an Instructor with the Del Mar College Regional Police Academy in January of 2011.  During that time, he taught courses in law enforcement and served as the Primary Firearms Instructor along with lecture and continuing education instruction.  Davis served in this capacity until he was named the Department Chair for Public Service in 2015.  This appointment eventually led to his current designation as the Dean of Industry and Public Service in September of 2020.

Davis earned an Associate of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice from Kilgore College in 1992 and followed that by completing the Kilgore College Police Academy that same year.  He then earned a Business Management Degree from LeTourneau University in 2000 and completed a Master Degree in Criminal Justice from Tarleton State University in 2014.  Davis has served as a member of the Coastal Bend Council of Governments Public Service Protection Committee from 2016 to 2020 and the Coastal Bend Council of Governments Prioritization Subcommittee Review & Score Panel from 2015-2020.  

Davis holds a Master Peace Officer License and is a TCOLE certified Instructor, Firearms Instructor, Rifle Instructor, Sexual Assault/Family Violence Investigator, Clandestine Laboratory Operator, Clandestine Laboratory Site Safety Officer and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy 233rd Session.  In 2013, Davis served on the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Legal Update Commission that published training material for law enforcement in Texas following the 83rd Legislative Session.  He served again on the Legal Update Commission for the 86th Legislative Session.
